Built for builders, guided by real work, sharpened with AI.

SMARTBUILD was built to fix what most construction software gets wrong: poor field adoption, scattered information, and pricing that punishes growth. We give contractors one connected platform with AI-powered field updates, flat pricing, and real support.

"If it doesn’t work in the field, it doesn’t matter."

A world where construction runs on clarity, proof, and intelligent workflows

Builders deserve technology that respects their craft.

Our vision is to make project management simple, connected, and powered by intelligence that works quietly in the background.

We measure success by how much time you save, how many disputes you avoid, and how much confidence you gain across every phase.

The next generation will build with AI at their side, proof in their pocket, and clarity across the job.

Why We Exist?

The industry has spent years wrestling with software designed far from jobsites. Heavy tools, complex workflows, and too many clicks. SMARTBUILD exists because construction deserves better.

Field-first thinking:

The system fits the way crews already work.

Proof at the source:

Logs, photos, and approvals captured where the work happens.

Voice over clicks:

smrt-E turns spoken updates into structured records.

Built for contenders:

Tools designed for growing contractors, not legacy giants.

From contender to challenger

SMARTBUILD grew from a personal moment of loss and a professional moment of truth.

In 2005, after the passing of his father, civil engineer and construction executive Zulq Malik founded BECC Construction. It was incorporated one week later as a promise to build something meaningful. Over the next decade he led major builds across Canada and the United States and built it into a multi-million-dollar GC firm competing with industry giants.

In the years of industry implementation, he saw the same problem everywhere. Project management tools slowed teams down instead of lifting them up. A missed RFI nearly cost him a major job. That single moment showed how fragile coordination becomes when systems fail.

He began creating internal tools for BECC that supported the way the field operated. Simple. Accurate. Fast. Those early tools built the foundation for SMARTBUILD.

In January 2019 he spun the tools out into a new company with a singular mission: give growing builders an advantage the incumbents never offered.

SMARTBUILD now delivers a full suite of construction modules powered by intelligent automation. It is built for the contenders who want to rise, not for legacy companies who want more control.

SMARTBUILD recognises “the nuanced processes within the construction industry” and offers unique products for unique challenges within the industry.

Our Journey

1997

Zulq graduated in Civil Engineering from Ryerson University.

1997 to 2004

He worked in project management roles at local construction companies. Advanced to national firms and worked on federal projects in the United States.

2005

Founded BECC Construction in honour of his father.

2005 to 2019

Witnessed that tools built by Silicon Valley did not fit the realities of small and mid-sized contractors. Developed internal systems to solve day-to-day field problems.

January 2019

Created SMARTBUILD as a focused construction technology company.

2020 to Present

Building an AI powered platform designed for the local builders of Canada and the United States. SMARTBUILD gives contenders the clarity and control they need to compete with larger incumbents.

What Makes SMARTBUILD Different

SMARTBUILD was not born from a market study or a boardroom debate. It came from years of searching, testing, and hoping a better solution already existed. When Zulq evaluated project management tools for BECC, he found something every growing contractor knows too well. The cost structures were designed for enterprise giants and punished small and mid-sized firms. Quotes were bloated. Seat limits forced field teams to share logins. It felt parasitical, not supportive.

The alternative was to stitch together point solutions. One tool for time. Another for drawings. Another for submittals. None of them talked to each other. None of them understood how a Canadian or American mid-sized contractor actually ran a job. Crews worked a certain way. Foremen coordinated in a certain rhythm. The software never matched it.

Most people buy off the shelf and hope their team adapts. Zulq made a different choice. He built a platform that adapted to the team. Simple, clear, and aligned to the flow of a real jobsite.

He also saw a deeper problem. Even when tools had features, they had no structured way to train crews. There was no method, no learning system, no predictable ramp. Field workers were left to figure everything out alone. Adoption was slow and often shallow.

These frustrations shaped the four principles that define SMARTBUILD today. They are not marketing lines. They are answers to real problems the industry deals with every day.

1. Inclusive pricing

  • Seat-based pricing punished small and mid-sized contractors. SMARTBUILD offers flat pricing so every worker can use the system without restriction. Growth should be supported, not taxed.

2. End-to-end platform

  • Point solutions waste time and scatter information. SMARTBUILD connects the entire project lifecycle in one place so teams can run jobs with fewer tools and more confidence.

3. Intuitive design

  • Field crews do not have time to learn complex software. They need clarity, speed, and familiarity. SMARTBUILD’s interface was tested on real projects and shaped around the natural flow of work, not abstract software logic.

4. S.I.T.E. Training Method

  • Adoption is the biggest barrier to any construction platform. SMARTBUILD created the S.I.T.E method, an immersive training framework based on Problem Based Learning, to help crews learn by doing. It is hands-on, practical, and designed for real-world retention.

Meet the Team

Zulq Malik

Founder and Chief Happiness Officer

Zulq Malik is an innovative and extroverted construction executive with nearly three decades of experience across project management, field operations, and risk mitigation. As the founder and CEO of SMARTBUILD, he brings deep jobsite knowledge and a clear mission to modernize how construction teams work. He also serves on the board of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, advocating for mental health across the trades. Zulq began his career as the youngest voice in every room and went on to lead major builds in Canada and the United States. Along the way he saw how outdated workflows and bloated software slowed teams and created avoidable disputes. These experiences shaped his belief that builders deserve technology that respects their craft and fits the way they work. This conviction led him to create SMARTBUILD, a field-first platform that combines practical workflows with intelligent coordination. Zulq calls himself the Chief Happiness Officer because his goal is simple. Give crews a product they enjoy using. When the field is happy, adoption follows and projects move with greater clarity and control.

Vinay Nair

CXO

Vinay Nair is the Chief Experience Officer at SMARTBUILD, where he leads the end-to-end customer journey and ensures that every interaction with the brand delivers clarity, confidence, and long-term value. With more than fifteen years across marketing strategy, brand development, customer experience, and GTM leadership, Vinay brings a global perspective shaped by work with high growth companies and established enterprises alike. His decision to step into the CXO role came after an eye-opening week at the Disney Institute with Zulq, an experience that reshaped his view of what thoughtful design and intentional customer care can do for an industry. Seeing how Disney integrates storytelling into every moment and operationalizes delight across millions of guests each day helped him envision the kind of experience SMARTBUILD could create for builders. That trip cemented his belief that construction deserves the same level of care and craft found in the world’s best service organizations.

The Road Ahead

Construction is entering a new era of intelligent coordination.

Construction is entering a new era of intelligent coordination.

SMARTBUILD is building the operating system for that future, but with a belief that has guided us from the start. People come first, technology follows.

AI is not here to replace experience. It is here to lift the people who built this industry.

AI is not here to replace experience. It is here to lift the people who built this industry.

Many field teams are traditionally averse to software, not because they lack skill, but because the tools never respected the way they work. SMARTBUILD uses AI to help them leap forward. It reduces clicks, removes paperwork, and guides crews through tasks without forcing new habits. Adoption becomes natural, not forced.

We also see AI as a learning and development tool.

We also see AI as a learning and development tool.

It will train the next generation of project managers and construction leaders to think clearly, plan better, and manage risk with confidence. The same intelligence that captures proof in the field can mentor new talent, refine decision making, and reinforce the skills that hold projects together.

Our platform includes modules for GCs, Subs, architects, estimators, coordinators, and field teams.
